Biography

Ilya M. Afanasyev is a Key Project Engineer at Huawei's Chebyshev Research Center (St. Petersburg) and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Innopolis University and Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI".

In 2006, he received his Ph.D. in Optical and Optoelectronic Technologies from the Vavilov State Optical Institute. He conducted postdoctoral research (2010–2013) as a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Trento (Italy).

He has over 25 years of R&D experience in both industry (Huawei, TGT, Giesecke & Devrient) and academia. He has also held Associate Professor positions at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and Kazan Federal University. His research specializes in autonomous systems, sensors, sensor fusion, computer vision, mobile robotics, and intelligent transportatiоn systems.

In Spring 2025, he lectured оn "Optoelectronic Detecting Technologies" and "Condensed Matter Physics" for students of the joint ITMO-CUST master's program at Changchun University of Science and Technology (CUST), China, representing the Institute of Advanced Data Transmissiоn Systems, ITMO University.

He is the author of 58 Scopus-indexed publications, holds 2 patents, and has an h-index of 23 (Google Scholar).

He received Huawei's "St. Petersburg Research Center Director Award" (Best Laboratory 2020) and "Best Mentor-2021". He serves as a reviewer for IEEE TPAMI, T-ASE, RA-L, and Access, and was an Invited Speaker at IEEE ICARA 2023.
